AI does not only need to be audited – it can transform how audit functions plan their work. This is Module 9 of the AI-Powered Internal Audit Professional Series, a 15-module program developed and published by Business Excellence, and it begins the shift from auditing AI to auditing with AI.
This module shows internal auditors how to use AI to make audit planning more comprehensive, more data-driven, and more strategically aligned. It walks through a systematic AI-enhanced annual planning process: using AI to analyze the audit universe and generate comprehensive risk scores across all auditable areas; applying AI clustering, heat mapping, and gap analysis to identify patterns and coverage gaps; employing AI to estimate resource requirements and optimize allocation across the year; and using generative AI to assist with plan documentation and the narrative that supports planning decisions to leadership and the board.
The module is explicit that AI supports professional judgment rather than replacing it. AI generates the quantitative foundation and surfaces patterns a manual review might miss; the auditor applies experience, organizational knowledge, and stakeholder awareness to produce a balanced, defensible plan.
Practical, ready-to-use prompts are provided for real planning tasks – including workforce and professional development planning, and quarterly schedule development that balances workload across team members, respects availability constraints, and reserves capacity for unplanned work. The module also addresses integrating AI recommendations with audit management systems so that plans, actuals, and future estimates continuously improve.
Reflecting current evidence – including Deloitte research indicating strong CAE intent to invest in generative AI and data analytics – the module is aligned with the IIA Global Internal Audit Standards 2024 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and reflects ISACA guidance on AI-enabled audit practice.
Delivered as a professional PowerPoint presentation with full speaker notes, the module includes a library of planning prompts, scheduling and resource templates, a risk assessment framework, real-world examples from cited sources, and a 10-question knowledge assessment quiz – enabling audit functions to plan with the speed and rigor AI now makes possible.
